What’s hot around town, what to do, where to go and the hottest toys and gifts!
A week ago Sunday I stopped by Sea Monster for their popular Sunday T Dance as that night they had recording artist Carol Jiani performing live. For those of you who haven’t been, the Sea Monster T dance is a true T dance with the place getting packed by 6:30 pm. You can go out, party and still be in bed early enough to be at work on time Monday morning. Last Wednesday I finally got a chance to stop by Nikki Adams’ Deal or No Deal at Bill’s, and I must tell you it’s just hilarious. It’s a mixture of Lets Make a Deal and Deal or No Deal, and I found myself not only laughing but having a great time. If you haven’t been, make it a must on your party schedule. Immediately after the contest was over, I walked across the street to visit my buddy DJ Oliver in his new gig as Boom presents Brazilian Wednesdays. I just love watching the Brazilian boys dancing to their native music. Thursday night featured 2 events; the first was the Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce event at E Coleccion. There were many movers and shakers of the GLBT business world there surrounded by the beautiful furniture and accessories that you can only find at E Coleccion. The second event was the grand opening of the Stonewall Library at its new location in the Art Serve Building.  This was also very well attended as it took me 10 minutes to find a parking spot. We as a community should be very proud of our library. Not only has it come a long way from its roots, it is quite amazing.

Kenzie L. Perry is the first leading artist to exhibit an art collection created exclusively for the 2nd Annual Cinco de MiMo Festival to showcase Miami Modern (MiMo) Architecture on Biscayne Boulevard. As a participating vendor in the festival last year, Perry saw a potential opportunity to celebrate his neighborhood and to help the MiMo Biscayne Association through his artistry. The exhibit will showcase dynamic art installations; one consisting of an 8 piece painting featuring the historic motel signs that have lit the Biscayne Boulevard corridor for many decades. The exhibit has been on display but the kick-off party is tonight at  Che Sopranos Trattoria & Pizzeria located at 7251 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Perry’s intentions are to create a new exhibit each year so residents and visitors can seize the opportunity to “own a piece of MiMo” at affordable prices. Artwork will be available for sale at the restaurant, online and during the festival at their tent located in front of Jimmy’s Flowers on Biscayne Boulevard and 69th Street. A portion of the proceeds will be given to the MiMo Biscayne Association. For additional information, please visit MimoBoulevard.org.

Florida Grand Opera’s 2008/09 season will conclude with Puccini’s Madama Butterfly which is currently playing.  Of all his operatic heroines, Puccini claimed that Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly) was his favorite. Certainly the drama of her heart wrenching affair is one of opera’s most moving and tragic love stories. For the brash American Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, it was a moment of euphoric pleasure.  For Butterfly, it meant a lifetime of love and devotion.  Family, fortune, and honor — Butterfly forsakes them all for the officer who will abandon her for a “respectable” American wife. Chinese soprano Shu-Ying Li and American soprano Maria Kanyova will make their FGO debuts alternating in the role of Cio-Cio-San.  Maria Kanyova replaces the previously announced Adina Aaron.  Tenors Arturo Chacón-Cruz and Alessandro Liberatore will alternate in the role of Pinkerton.  American mezzo-soprano Katharine Goeldner will make her FGO debut as Suzuki, performing the role in all performances, and baritone Jake Gardner will sing the American Consul Sharpless for all performances. Florida Grand Opera’s Music Director Stewart Robertson will conduct all performances. Ticket Information – Single tickets for Florida Grand Opera’s production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly range from $10 to $250.  For tickets, call 1-800-741-1010 or visit FGO.org and order safely online.

Groundbreaking, chart-topping electronic legends Depeche Mode return with their most dazzling and diverse album in decades. Sounds of the Universe finds Martin Gore, Dave Gahan and Andy “Fletch” Fletcher back at the top of their game after almost 30 years together; they sound like a band reborn. With global sales in excess of 100 million, including number one albums and dozens of classic singles, Depeche Mode belong to a select premier league of supergroupss – alongside U2, REM, and Metallica – who have survived from the early 1980’s with their ideals, their creative vision and their core members intact. Lyrically Sounds of the Universe contains many of the bands enduring obsessions – lust, spirituality, romantic yearning, sinful temptation and sadomasochism – plus more overt black humor than any of their previous albums. As they approach their 30th anniversary, Depeche Mode is on a personal and music high. Old tensions have been resolved, hatchets buried and bad habits conquered. Recorded in Santa Barbara and New York, Sounds of the Universe was born from positive creative chemistry, and it really shows. The band is set to go on a mammoth global jaunt starting May 9th with 28 stadium concerts across the Middle East and Europe with further legs of the tour to include the US and South America. Public response to the tour of the Universe has been phenomenal with many European stadiums selling out almost immediately. Depeche Mode’s Sounds of the Universe was released recently from Mute/Capital/Virgin. For more info visit DepecheMode.com.
