copa_bannerLuchando por La Copa Mundial en Brasil

Sobreviven muchos equipos Americanos

¿No?

Last month, the biggest tournament of all, The FIFA World Cup kicked off in Brazil. In last month’s issue of Genre Latino I made a few predictions and boy was I wrong. Incredible surprises, exciting games, hellish heat, and even a bite on the shoulder are the events that have dominated the headlines in the 2014 World Cup.

Up till now, the Brazilian heat has been no good at all for many of the favored teams, above all for the European powerhouses. Fans from Spain and Portugal have to be the saddest of all; their teams didn’t even make it out of the group play round. In their first game, Spain faced The Netherlands, a repeat of the Championship game of the last World Cup. Unfortunately for the Spaniards, Holland won after scoring 5 goals. The Portuguese team, with their captain Cristiano Ronaldo, didn’t do much better in their debut. In their first game against Germany, they lost 4-0.  The Italians and English weren’t very happy either. Their teams had to go back to Europe with their heads hung low as they too were eliminated in the first round of the tournament. As this tournament kicked off, no one would have believed that those four teams would have been eliminated so early.

The US, who played in the same group as Portugal, won their first game against the African nation of Ghana. The victory was very special for the Americans because in the last two World Cups that very same African team eliminated the US. When the Americans took on Portugal in their second game of the series, the game ended with a tie when the Portuguese scored a goal in the last 30 seconds of the game. However, the Yanks continued on to take on Belgium in the Round of 16, the second round of the tournament. It really was a miracle for the US to make it as far as they have, everyone said they had no chance of making it out of “The Group of Death.”

copa_costa_ricaThe biggest surprises of the World Cup are the victories of the American teams. Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica all won their groups making it to the second phase of play. Along with Chile, Mexico, the US and Uruguay, the teams from this side of the Atlantic have dominated the tournament. Only two of the American teams that made it into the tournament were eliminated in group play. Honduras and Ecuador didn’t make it to the second round.

The World Cup of 2014 has definitely created a few heroes. The goalies from the US andcopa_howard Mexico are among the best examples. Tim Howard, the American goalie shined under the world’s focus. Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa became a hero in his country when he didn’t allow any goals in that country’s game against the Brazilian hosts.

Perhaps the strangest event of all was when a player from Uruguay bit an Italian when the two teams played each other in the first round. By using his teeth in the now famous game, Luis Suárez got himself a 4 month ban from ALL soccer activities  and will be forced to miss the next 9 international games for his country AND he will be fined more than $100,000. Apparently, this isn’t the first time he has bitten another player, in fact, it’s the third time he has done it. Several betters even won money after they bet that he would bite someone in one of the games. Crazy!

The single elimination games continue this month leading up to the Championship game that will take place in Rio de Janeiro on July 13. Who knows which teams will make it to the finals but there is a good chance it will be one of the American teams.
