YO SOY LA FELICIDAD DE ESTE MUNDO
Una película mexicana arde las pantallas este agosto
Fue un verdadero placer charlar con el escritor director Julián Hernández , director de YO SOY LA FELICIDAD DE ESTE MUNDO, una pelicula mexicana que sale en la venta este mes de agosto. Hernández ganó la fama después de dirigir la pelicula aclamada “Mil nubes de paz cercan el cielo, amor, jamás acabarás de ser amor” Es ganador del premio Teddy del festival de cine de Berlin.
¿De dónde eres?
Nací en la Ciudad de México. Siempre he vivido aquí y tengo la firme creencia de que aquí seguiré por mucho tiempo.
¿Cómo llegaste a ser un director del cine?
Habría querido ser cantante de ópera. Cuando pequeño, me imaginaba sobre un escenario interpretando Otello o Samson. Era un espectador asiduo. Un joven cinéfilo, cuya educación sentimental había sido forjada por los amores fílmicos del Cine Mexicano de los años 40 y 50. Pero hacer cine no estaba en mis planes. Tras el intento frustrado por estudiar música de ópera y concierto, llegué a la conclusión de que el cine era una buena posibilidad. Estudié en el Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. El CUEC es la escuela más antigua en latinoamerica y en aquél año de 1990, solo ingresaban 15 alumnos, ser admitido en el primer intento, fue una sorpresa. Estuve ahí hasta 1995. La industria en México había desaparecido casi por completo en aquella década, se realizaban alrededor de 10 películas.
Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de realizar una idea- desde cuando comienza como pensamiento hasta tener la suerte de ver la pelicula en la pantalla grande.
En 2009 tenía una idea clara sobre la película que haría a continuación, escribí el guión en colaboración con una guionista –algo que no había hecho antes-, una vez concluído nos dedicamos a reunir los fondos para realizarla. No lo logramos aquél año y decidí realizar otro proyecto que fuera factible en lo que lograbamos concretar la oytra película. Ese proyecto se convirtió en “Yo soy…”. La historia surgió muchos años antes, después de ver el episodio realizado por Fassbinder para la película “Deuschtland in herbts” (1978). En ese momento empezó a gestarse la historia de Emiliano, el director de cine en México que tiene verdaderas complicaciones para establecer relaciones duraderas con otro ser humano. La película se filmo durante 15 días y la postproducción tardo 2 años.
Hay muchos directores que dicen que la respuesta del público no les interesa, a mí me parece que mienten, hacemos películas porque anhelamos encontrar almas afines con las que compartir nuestras soledades y nuestras angustías. La reacción del público es fundamental. Hago las películas pensando que cuando se proyecte finalmente en una pantalla, habrá alguien que piense y sienta que lo que le estoy contando es verdadero, que habla de él y que juntos buscan una respuesta. Hacemos películas para sentirnos un poco menos solos.
Me puedes explicar un poco más sobre ¨Yo soy la felicidad de este mundo¨ ¿de qué se trata la película? ¿Cuáles son los temas principales?
La película narra el proceso creativo de un director de cine. La manera cómo las experiencias de la vida cotidiana se transforman –no deliberadamente- y se hacen presentes en su obra. No es que Emiliano salga a vivir en la consciencia de que todo lo que le ocurra se transformara forzosamente en material para una película. Pese a que los demás así lo crean. ¿El tema? Creo que el tema es el mismo que recorre mis películas anteriores: el permanente anhelo de completud de los seres humanos.
Muchos otros temas navegan a lo largo de la película, no los tengo claros, muchas veces los descubro cuando ha pasado el tiempo y estoy en el proceso de una nueva película. También ocurre que súbitamente me queda claro la razón por la que tome tal o cual decisión. Decisión que en su momento no tenía en absoluto clara.
Comprendo la película mucho tiempo después.
Varias veces en la película se menciona el matrimonio gay. Aquí en el estado de Florida todavía no hay matrimonio para la comunidad LGBT. ¿Qué opinas de la situación de los derechos para los gays?
Creo que los derechos deben existir para todos en igualdad de condiciones.
Lo que Emiliano piensa y dice, es que el matrimonio, como institución, no es viable en la actualidad. Piensa que con frecuencia el matrimonio termina con la afinidad de las personas, con el deseo de compartir. Sus opiniones no se centran en las parejas heterosexuales sino en la reproducción de sus características que las parejas homosexuales intentan llevar a cabo y que, paradojicamente, son las que él establece con el escort.
Hay imágenes fuertes y sexuales en la película- ¿se usan para causar un shock en el público o para otro motivo?
Esas imágenes responden a las necesidades de la historia. Creo que existe un falso pudor al respecto de la desnudez, no solo masculina sino también femenina. Falso pudor y explotación descarada del cuerpo humano. En mis películas los personajes se comunican también, cuando no fundamentalmente, a través del cuerpo. No sólo porque sean bailarines –como en caso de Yo soy…- sino porque el cuerpo no sabe mentir y es casi imposible lograr que el cuerpo mienta cuando está cerca de otro, algo que hacemos todo el tiempo a través de la palabra.
La desnudez funciona entonces como un vehículo comunicador de las emociones de los personajes.
¿Con qué actores te gustaría trabajar en el futuro?
Me gustaría trabajar con Salim Kechiouche, con Ryan Gosling, con Marine Vacth, con Emile Hirschy, con Charlotte Rampling con Rain (Jeong Ji-Hoon), con Juan José Ballesta y con Monica Vitti.

It was a pleasure to get the chance to chat with Writer and director Julián Hernández director of I AM HAPPINESS ON EARTH a film that will be available later this month. Hernández previously directed the critically acclaimed film A Thousand Clouds of Peace Fence the Sky, Love, Your Being Love Will Never End. His other work includes Broken Sky as well as Raging Sun, Raging Sky. He is the winner of the Teddy Award at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.
Where are you from?
I was born in Mexico City where I’ve always lived. I firmly believe I will stay here for a long time.
How did you become a director?
I really wanted to be an opera singer, when I was young I always imagined myself on stage playing Othello or Samson. I was a regular moviegoer. I was a young cinephile whose emotional education was forged by a love of Mexican Cinema of the 40’s and 50’s. After getting frustrated trying to get into schools to study music and opera, I came to the conclusion that movies we are good choice for me. I studied at the College of Cinematography at the Autonomous National University of Mexico which is the oldest school of its kind in Latin America and in that year, 1990, only accepted 15 students. Getting in on my first try was a real surprise. I was there until 1995. During the 1990’s the film industry in Mexico had almost completely disappeared, they only made around 10 films.
Tell me about the experience of creating a film, from when it starts as an idea till when you are lucky enough to see the film on the big screen.
In 2009 I had a very clear idea about what film I would make next. I wrote the script with the help of a writer, which I had never done before. Once it was finished, we decided to fundraise to get the film made. We didn’t get it done that first year and I decided to do another project that was more feasible and would allow us to do the original film. That film became I am Happiness… The storyline came about years earlier after seeing a scene by Fassbinder for the film “Deuschtland in herbts.” That was the moment I started ruminating on the Emiliano’s story- a Mexican film director who has real complications establishing lasting relationships with other people. The filming lasted a total of about 15 days and the post production took another 2 years.
There are a lot of directors that say that they don’t care what audiences say about their films. I think they are lying. We make films because we long to find kindred spirits who share our sense of loneliness and anxieties. The relationship with the audience is fundamental. I make films so that when they are finally projected onto the screen there is someone who things and feels that what I have to say is truthful and it speaks to them. We all make films so that we don’t feel so alone.
Can you explain a little more about “I am Happiness on Earth”
The film follows the creative process of a movie director- the way that life’s daily experiences transform (not deliberately) and present themselves in his work. It’s not that Emiliano begins to live with an awareness that everything that happens is necessarily material for his film, just that others think that’s so.
I think the theme is similar to the rest of the films that I have made, the lifelong yearning for wholeness of the human race. There are several other themes that reveal themselves throughout the film, but most are not clear while I’m making the movie, it’s only later, usually when I’m making another film that I discover what they are. I understand the films more as time passes.
Several times in the film the characters mention gay marriage. Here in Florida, we have had rulings in our favor, but still don’t have marriage equality. What do you think about this situation and other gay rights issues?
I think that rights should be the same for everyone with no conditions. What Emiliano thinks and says is that marriage, as an institution, is no longer viable. He thinks that marriage usually ends with peoples affinity for each other and their desire to share. His opinions don’t have to do with hetero couples, but with gay couples desire to copy those heterosexual norms which, paradoxically he ends up establishing with “an escort.”
There are some really strong sexual images in this film, did you use them to shock the audience or for some other reason?
Those images respond to the needs of the story. I think that there is a sense of false modesty with respect to nudity, not just male nudity, but with females as well; False modesty and shameless exploitation of the human body. In my films the characters are communicating through their bodies. No just as dancers, in the case of I’m Happiness, but because the body doesn’t know how to lie, and it’s almost impossible for our bodies to lie when we are close to others, which we are able to do with words. Nudity then, functions as a tool to communicate the character’s emotions.
What actors would you like to work with in the future?
I would like to work with Salim Kechiouche, with Ryan Gosling, Marine Vacth, Emile Hirschy, Charlotte Rampling, Rain (Jeong Ji-Hoon), Juan José Ballesta and with Monica Vitti.
I Am Happiness On Earth will be released on DVD and VOD (All cable providers, iTunes, Amazon Instant) on August 19, 2014. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
