Sweetwater Location Is Now Open!

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, Swedish home furnishings brand IKEA opened its first store in Miami-Dade County at 1801 NW 117th Avenue in Sweetwater, adjacent to the Dolphin Mall and at the intersection of the Dolphin Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike. The 416,000-square foot store is the second IKEA in South Florida and the fourth in Florida (the brand is represented in Sunrise, Tampa and Orlando).

Many people in Miami-Dade County were excited about IKEA’s arrival, and they were especially happy about not having to travel to Sunrise anymore to buy the furniture and other decorations they love. Customers were invited to line up starting Monday, August 25 — two full days in advance of the grand opening. When doors opened, they were greeted by an impressive array of showrooms that included three model home interiors, 44 room settings, over ten thousand items for purchase, a “Children’s IKEA” showroom and playroom, and a restaurant that serves both Swedish and American fare and seats 600 people. Preferred parking is also available for the handicapped and for families with young children.

This new IKEA store will be helpful to the South Florida economy and to the environment. Over 500 people were employed during the construction phase and now over 350 jobs have been filled for full and part-time positions working in the store. Also, IKEA’s commitment to clean solar power has led to solar panels being installed on top of 90% of the Miami store. Upon the store’s grand opening, it officially became the largest array of solar panels used for power purposes in South Florida.

IKEA currently has 350 stores open in 44 countries, including 39 in the United States alone. IKEA was placed on Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 2014.
