GLDec_Conexiones_copy6Modern, Safe, and Beautiful Spain

In the last decade, Spain has emerged as one of the best European countries in terms of rights and respect for the LGBT community. Its main cities are very modern with easy access to newly remodeled airports, affordable high speed trains crisscrossing the country, and easy to navigate Metro (Subway) systems. Members of the LGBT community will feel very secure knowing that they are protected by laws against violence. In Spain, these days, it’s more than tolerance. Tolerance implies a bother that someone has to put up with. Not in Spain. There, it’s total acceptance, with recent polls reporting that 88% of the population supports LGBT rights.

LGBT History

With so much support throughout the country, gay neighborhoods have really grown not just in the principal cities of Madrid and Barcelona, but also in the smaller cities like Granada and Valencia. In 2005,under the leadership of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero the government legalized marriage equality. Despite threats and attempts to overturn the law, it was upheld in 2012 when the highest court affirmed the laws validity. En 2006, Zapatero’s same government passed a law that allows the trans community to self-identify on official forms, despite the fact that they may not have surgically changed their sex. Adoption is also legalized for LGBT couples. There are several LGBT members of the current government in Spain and the US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, James Costos is a gay man.

Getting to Spain

From Miami, there are several direct flights to and from Spain. You can fly direct to the capital city of Madrid or to Barcelona. Madrid is located directly in the center of the country so it serves as a great base to visit other cities and important places in Spain. Barcelona is in the north east of the country right on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The national airline of Spain is Iberia. With their new planes and excellent service, it’s worth a little more to travel with them. There are connecting flights through New York and Chicago or another option is to transfer in a different European city. To be completely honest, you are taking a big risk of lost luggage and long delays if you choose a multi stop itinerary. Sometimes it costs a little more for direct flights, but not always, but it is probably worth it to not have the extra hassle.

GLDec_Conexiones_copy7Madrid- Capital City

Madrid is the biggest and most important city in the country with a population of more than 3 million people. There are various modes of transportation that you can take to get from the airport to the city center. There are trains, busses, and taxis. There is a flat rate of €30 to all places in the center of Madrid. If you decide to take the train, you also will have to take the metro and they are two separate systems. At the airport station, you can buy a discounted combo ticket that will get you to the closest metro station to your hotel. You should download the Metro Madrid (subway system) app, it’s free and includes a tourist map and a lot of great information about fares, delays, and different stops.

The gayborhood in Madrid is called Chueca, named after the subway stop. There are a lot of hotels and hostels in the area that are specifically for or cater to gay travelers. The Hostal Pizzaro www.hostalpizarro.eu  and Hostal Puerta del Sol www.hostalpuertadelsol.com are two cheap options in Chueca. You can also find all of the luxury hotel brands in the center of the city if you are looking for a little more than a traveler’s hotel.

There are tons of restaurants in Chueca. In the square where the Metro stop is, you will find some great open air cafes and a few of the bars and nightclubs that make the area famous. About one block from the square, you will find Libertad 26 (26 Libertad Street at the corner of Augusto Figeroa) a great restaurant, especially if you are in the mood for Paella. They often have a Paella for two special that includes a bottle of wine for €28. This is one of the best paellas in Madrid; it’s full of fresh delicious seafood and chicken. So good!

GLDec_Conexiones_copy8Barcelona- Impressive Architecture

Barcelona is the second largest city, but with its huge port and access to the sea, it could be the most important economically. It is a city dominated by amazing architecture thanks to several famous architects, most importantly Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi’s work is easy to identify and fascinating to see and study. The Sagrada Familia, his masterpiece, is a Basilica in the gothic style and features such complex architecture that even though construction started in 1882, they still need more than 20 years to complete it. Parc Guell is another important work by Gaudi. It’s a huge park where the architect and his patron planned a new type of neighborhood, but it failed to catch on and is now a huge green space. It features amazing mosaic artwork and amazing panoramic views of the city that are really impressive. To visit these attractions you MUST buy your tickets in advance, generally, same day tickets are hard to come by.

To really orient yourself in Barcelona (and in Madrid too) buy tickets on the Tourist Bus (http://www.barcelonabusturistic.cat) It’s hop on hop off, good for an entire day (two and three day passes available) and includes a guided tour, headphones, a map, and coupons for special offers around the city.

GLDec_Conexiones_copy9Sitges-Spain’s Fire Island

In summertime, if you want to find the gay guys in Europe, you have to visit Sitges. It’s a small village in Cataluña about 45 minutes south of Barcelona. Sitges most popular attraction is the beaches, and it has two gay beaches. La Playa de la Bassa Rodana is the centrally located beach about a 5 minute walk from the center of town. La Playa de las Balmins is about a 20 minute walk, and is a nudist beach, so beware, you may find naked ladies too!

Sitges has a tiny year round population, but during the summer season, the population explodes with (mostly gay) tourists.  Like most of Spain, there are cheap hotels and hostels but Sitges is really famous for its luxury hotels. More than half of the hotel rooms in town are at 4 Star (or more) hotels. The Melia Gran Sitges ( http://www.melia.com/es/hoteles/espana/sitges/melia-sitges/index.html)  is a great option, it’s a resort featuring great restaurants and most of the rooms are ocean view.
