Nephew of the Week: Ralph Disney

Dishing-2951_newphewrDJ Disney is one of our naughtiest nephews! He has been spinning in all our favorite clubs. When not spinning at Hamburger Mary’s in GaYBOR, Disney can be found under the I-275 overpass at Busch Boulevard!

You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up!

In every old neighborhood in Florida, there is a big old house that has been converted into a funeral home. In our neighborhood, we had one of these funeral homes. It was located on Fremont Street next to the old Interstate.  One Halloween back in the mid-’80s, the local West Tampa Chamber of Commerce asked if they could borrow a casket from a funeral parlor for their planned Halloween Haunted House.

The funeral director gave them an old casket that had been in the garage rafters for many years. When the volunteers opened the casket, there was a mummified body inside! After more investigation, there were several other corpses found in this funeral parlor’s garage! Needless to say, the funeral parlor closed. Many state investigations took place and the whole thing was front page news.

It was later remodeled and re-opened as a controversial group home paid for with taxpayers’ monies. Then when I-275 was expanded, it was torn down.

WOW…just think of the stories those walls could tell!

GaYBOR Holiday Party

The 8th annual GaYBOR Holiday Storefront Contest and Holiday Party was held on Friday, December 12 at The Honey Pot on 7th Avenue. All area businesses were invited and everyone was welcome to attend the party. There were free appetizers by area restaurants, free entertainment provided by many of the clubs’ performers, in and out of drag, and free holiday cheer and networking from GaYBOR District members. As you know, the GaYBOR District is a hard-working Historic Ybor City organization and this party is a well-deserved celebration for them.

Snow on 7th Parade

The streets of Historic Ybor City were again filled with snow and sleighs on Saturday, December 13, for the Ybor City Holiday Spirit’s Snow on 7th Parade. This year, besides planning for a heavy snow storm on 7th Avenue, live reindeer were on 16th Street, along with fifteen area high school bands performing and waking up the business district.

Live entertainment began performing at 5 p.m. on 7th Avenue. People who came early had the chance to find their special holiday gift at the many GaYBOR District stores and restaurants.

Hamburger Mary’s Turn-A-Bout

Hamburger Mary’s Ybor Annual Turn-A-Bout Night had reversal clothing changes that were remarkable, and some remarkably funny. From management to servers to kitchen staff, everyone went way out for this year’s charitable event.

The charity contributions all went to the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Hoping to beat last year’s $7500 donation, the whole crew did another fantastic job in entertaining all the crowd.

There will be more charitable events all holiday season at Hamburger Mary’s, so stop on by!

Tampa Pride Benefit at Liquid Tampa

On Saturday night, December 6, a benefit for Tampa Pride was held at Liquid Tampa. The bar was packed with customers and the level of enthusiasm was high. The bartenders were full of grace. Mama, Chris Myers and CJ were great. Thank you for the kind donation to Tampa Pride.
