The Pope as a gay magazine´s celebrity?

Wait, wait, wait, I am going to explain why we have decided to dedicate a few precious pages to a man who has continued to say he doesn´t support marriage equality. Pope Francis really is a living paradox, a liberal heading up the most conservative organization in the world, a poor man living in the most ornate palace in the world, an American living in Europe. Every day he becomes more fascinating, especially because he refuses to behave like any other Pope.

In 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Cardinal Priest of the Church of Saint Robert Bellarmino became Pope Francis. Bergoglio, who hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina, also served as the Archbishoppope_copy of Buenos Aires before becoming a cardinal and then Pope. For the first time in the history of the Catholic Church, there is a pope from an American continent.

Since his very first decision after the Conclave, Francis has done things differently. By choosing the name Francis, he broke with tradition and didn´t choose to take the name of one of his predecessors. This was the first time that´s happened since Pope Lando in the 10th Century (913). The name selection was just the beginning of a pontificate vastly different than that of Benedict XVI or John Paul II. Francis chose not to live in the official Papal apartments in the Palace, instead, he prefers to live in a small apartment where he has better access to people and isn´t surrounded by such luxury. He has been spotted using public transportation even after his election to the Papacy and he has been known to put on a priest´s frock and wonder the streets of Rome alone giving aid to the poor. He really doesn´t behave like any other king or head of state.

The Pope and The Gays

Just about everyone knows the Catholic Church´s official position on homosexuality, even though as a Catholic who didn´t miss many Sundays in Church from my infancy until coming out of the closetat 29, I NEVER ONCE heard a word in church about gays. Nothing good, nothing bad. NADA.  Pope Francis has repeatedly said that he doesn´t support marriage equality, but he also clarified that no one should judge, not even the pope. In a press conference he said: ¨If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge them? I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone” who respects God and “does what is right is acceptable.¨

In the fall of 2014, while thousands of Bishops from all over the world gathered in Rome for a conference on the family, the pope spoke out again on the topic of ¨the gays.¨ He told the bishops that the church has to find a way to help parents of gay children support their kids. His comments represent a radical change in the usual anti-gay message of the church which has taught that homosexuality is wicked sickness and a mortal sin.

The Pope, Cuba, and the US

Generally, Popes don´t get involved in international politics. But… big surprise, Francisco is different. When President Obama announced diplomatic changes with Cuba in December, he thanked Pope Francis for his help in negotiating the deal. The pope reached out to the President and the Cuban government offering to host the top secret negotiations in the Vatican. Upon finding this out, some Catholic Cubans, specifically those living in South Florida, LOST THEIR MINDS and expressed their frustration saying that they wished the pope would focus on the Cuban people, not their oppressive leaders.

Is Pope Francis one of the most powerful men in the world? It´s certainly true that in 2014, he has worked tirelessly to bring about important change all over the world, using his position as leader of the more than1.2 billion Catholics in never before seen ways, at least in ways not seen in recent history. His message of acceptance, dedication to marginalized populations, his desire to live like Jesus and to encourage debate on topics that are usually declared taboo to religious leaders make him a man of the people and will, hopefully, continue to define his papacy.
