GETTING THE COLOR RIGHT

1. Quality starts with the proper resolution. A typical, CMYK 5.5 x 8.5 photo will be 16.1 megs. Starting with a smaller file size and artificially pumping it up in Photoshop does not work. The Scanner must be able to capture the color depth needed to print at a high quality line screen.

2. Photoshop users should set their preferences to CMYK:
3. Photos scanned in RGB should be adjusted to heighten the contrast ratios using the curve settings in Photoshop and then convert to CMYK.
4. If correcting flesh, the densitometer numbers for neutral Caucasian flesh should be near:  12 cyan, 24 magenta, 30 yellow, 0 black.  The numbers will be proportionately higher for darker complexions with a minor increase in cyan..
5. Things to remember:  Most blue skies and trees have little or no magenta in them. Most beaches have little cyan or magenta. Removing black from flesh should be achieved in "levels" and subtracted from the highlights.
6. Sharpening a picture is achieved utilizing the Unsharp Mask Filter.
A nominal setting is 300 at 1 pixel. These numbers may vary due to the type of photograph and format used. Watch for distortion. Not enough and you will see no effect, too much and it will distort.
7. Maximum, trouble free quality is achieved by saving your photo as a flattened TIFF of PDF, with no alpha channels. (jpg files are compressed and lessen the quality of the image and causes color shifting).
