Vs.

Maggie v. Sullie

What was anticipated to be the equal rights version of a celebrity death match turned out to be, well, blah. Last week the CATO Institute hosted a forum on whether or not there is a place for gays in conservatism. In this corner – gay activist, author and columnist Andrew Sullivan; in the opposite corner, weighing in at… no, let’s not go there… anti-gay activist and president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) Maggie Gallagher. At first glance this forum had all the makings of a first class match.

The State of Our Union

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

There appeared to be a great deal of controversy surrounding last week's State of the Union Address in which President Obama said, “This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. It's the right thing to do.” The ambiguity of Obama's statement caused Queerty.com to take the ball and run with it, posting a snippet of the president's speech the day it was given followed by commentary that has become signature snarkiness:

Family Matters

For all the nonsense we hear spewed about protecting marriage, defending the family, family values, etc., this week we'll take a look at how valuable those notions really are to those who hide behind the terms to justify their homophobia.

GOProud

Apparently gay conservatives were not getting enough grief as Log Cabin Republicans – some felt the incongruity between their political beliefs and sexual orientation were insufficient, fled the Log Cabin and formed GOProud. To cement their position as self-hating gays they're sponsoring next year's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) February 18th through ...

Holy?!

¢atholic ¢haritie$

The Archdiocese of Washington (a division of the Catholic Church, Inc.) has threatened to take its ball and go home if the City Council of Washington D.C. persists in its pursuit of a law that would allow same-sex couples to marry. The law, which protects churches by not requiring them to let space or compel them to participate in these unions, would also prevent the Catholic Church from discriminating against LGBT people. Apparently that ...

Halloween’s Over: The Bats Want Their Guano Back

Hide & Seek - Now that President Obama has signed the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law, we no longer have to tolerate the abuse heaped upon members of the LGBT community by bigots and worry whether or not law enforcement will take the necessary actions to prosecute these crimes and hopefully prevent them in the future, right? We should feel safer knowing that we are protected and be less fearful about participating in our communities, right? Yes and no. The law, the first positive piece of federal legislation directed toward LGBT people, modified existing hate crimes law to include ...

Hate on Trial

Prop H8 on Trial

The makers of California's Proposition 8, the ballot measure that ended marriage equality in the state, were quick to jump up and declare their opposition to same-sex couples marrying and to rally for a ballot measure so everyone could vote on what should be the private right of two people to choose who they wish to become a family with; they aren't so quick to display the courage of their convictions in a court of law.

2009 - Where Did It Go?

2009 has been quite a year. After we endured the last 19 1/2 days of George W. Bush's two terms as President of the United States, we began the year with renewed hope as Barack Obama was sworn into office. As time went on we quickly forgot the rough ride aboard the U.S.S. Bush as we set sail into 2009 with high hopes and promises of change ready to be fulfilled. That, too, has been a rough ride. Where has this year gone?

The War on Christmas Has Begun!

Actually, like anything else related to the holidays, the War on Christmas began back in September, when the American Family Association (AFA) sent out one of their signature action alerts letting their minions know that Gap stores are not Christmas-friendly. AFA eventually called for a boycott of Gap stores, including Banana Republic and Old Navy, when Gap ...

A Walk Down Memory Lane

More Electile Dysfunction - Last week’s elections were a mixed bag at best. Washington’s domestic partnership law stood the test of fundamentalist naysayers who tried to repeal the state’s “everything but marriage” domestic partnership law passed last year. You may recall that petitioners gleefully signed to put the repeal on the ballot and were immediately fearful of their names and addresses being made public by websites like WhoSigned.org ....

He’s Done it (Again)! - Between losing the Olympics for Chicago, winning the Nobel Peace Prize and expressing his support for LGBT rights at a banquet for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), President Obama has proven his commitment to equal rights by making everyone unhappy, that is if you believe everything you hear or read in the media. Multiple sources report that the LGBT community is still up in arms over Obama’s lack of action on his repeated promises to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act; the focus of our outrage now is allegedly due to his not laying out a timeline for accomplishing the stated goals. None of the criticisms we’ve seen thus far, from the right or the left (including Rush Limbaugh’s embarrassment at Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize), come as close to hilariously insane as those offered by RenewAmerica.com. A recent commentary described Obama’s speaking to the HRC as “double-tongued” and suggested he was of the “unholy spirit” with ethics “on the side of the anti-Bible.” (I think I lost my copy of that scripture at the same time my copy of The Gay Agenda went missing – has anyone seen them?)
