The Evolution of Discotekka
By: Dean Gabriel Williams
Just as homo sapiens evolved into homo sapien sapien, the more contemporary, savvy human being, so has Downtown Miami transformed into a Mecca for nightlife and entertainment. At the center of that mecca, and quite unanimously, at the center of gay nightlife in Miami, is Discotekka. Here is a breakdown of this evolution.
Joe Marcella is a spicy, slick talking, well-connected promoter. He, along with Wendy, an intelligent, “super bella” businesswoman, had a vision for a nightclub in Downtown Miami catering to young gay Miami - and her name was Discotekka. They created the concept, but they needed something more. That something more was Milancita, Vegas Dion, and DJ Jarell.
If you don’t know Milancita by now, let the Miami Beat educate you a bit. Creative graphic designer, and now successful promoter, Milancita built a solid reputation for herself by constantly re-inventing herself and her image. From curly, brown hair and the effortless “jeans and a tank top” look, to a jet black neck length cut hair, black stilettos, and a knee length, black and white dress reminiscent of the glamour of the 1950’s, Milancita created the “well to do” image that Discotekka now proudly upholds and maintains. Milancita has been nominated for the “Promoter of the Year” Latino Press Award, so put your money where your mouth is and show Milancita some love by voting for her at latinopressaward.com/vote. It’s simply lovely in Vegas! Vegas Dion, one of Miami’s most beloved divas, first began along with the Sunday cabaret at Club Azucar, then as the first Miss Azucar in 2004, and now as Discotekka’s Queen and Resident Diva. As the Maitre’D of Miami’s most acclaimed Saturday night, Vegas Dion is the bridge between management, promotions, and most importantly, the patrons of Discotekka.
DJ Jarell, Discotekka’s resident DJ, takes a stalwart approach to his work and enjoys spinning the tunes that get and keep Discotekka jumping right through to the early morning hours. His previous experience at such clubs as the former O’zone and the former Coliseum, just to name a few, makes the evolution of Discotekka from the new kid on the block to the Saturday night for Miami’s “well connected” young gay socialites complete.
On April 19th, Vegas, Joe, Wendy, and the staff and patrons of Discotekka celebrated its 1st Birthday. It is our wish that Discotekka will be blessed with many more years of success. Discotekka has been nominated for both “Latin Night of the Year” and “Best Night Club” Latino Press Awards. Show some love for Discotekka and vote at latinopressaward.com/vote.
