Aids Walk Miami

NEW!
“It was a beautiful day — the perfect day for a walk,” said Care Resource's Terry DeCarlo about the recent AIDS Walk Miami. “We had more people than we expected, the weather held up beautifully and there were absolutely no problems,” Terry added.

On April 20th, Care Resource held it's twentieth annual AIDS Walk Miami with around 3,500 walkers, creating the largest such event in South Florida. Acting as emcees were WSVN's evening news anchor, Craig Stevens, and Michael Aller from the Miami Beach Tourist and Convention Bureau. Actress/comedian Jane Lynch served as Grand Marshal of the event.
This year's AIDS Walk Miami, one of oldest and largest in the country, not only benefits Care Resource, but also the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida, Broward House, and the Food for Life Network Food Bank. All money raised from the walk benefit both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. “One-hundred percent of the money raised from the Miami AIDS Walk stays in our local community to assist our local community. No other AIDS walk in South Florida can make that claim,” said Terry. The walk spanned a 3.1 mile course and started at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The current fact sheet from the Centers for Disease Control states that Miami-Dade County now ranks number-one in the country with HIV/AIDS infections followed by Fort Lauderdale. Care Resource currently takes care of over 4,000 individuals affected or infected with HIV/AIDS by providing medical services, case management, the only South Florida Food Bank for HIV/AIDS individuals and many other services and employs over 120 people in both counties. Additionally, Care Resource offers free HIV and STD testing at their Miami-Dade and Fort Lauderdale offices and at the Boca Raton Florida Atlantic University campus.

At press time, Care Resource was still opening envelopes and counting the money, but Terry estimates that they will have taken in between $300,000 and $325,000 from the walk but donations will continue to be accepted on their website at www.aidswalkmiami.org until July 1st.
