Gay Emancipation Proclamation

President Barack H. Obama
The White House
Washington, D.C.

Dear President Obama,

I cannot begin to express how disillusioned and upset I am that you and your administration have not supported gay rights by supporting instead the Defense of Marriage Act before the Supreme Court of the United States. President Obama, you have also not addressed nor acted on the continuing assault on gay citizens by letting the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy stand in the United States Armed Forces.
“In times like these, issues like repealing the marriage act” (and don’t ask, don’t tell) “can seem like a distraction – or political liability,” quoting the New York Times Editorial of June 16, 2009. The Civil War was also a distraction, President Obama, but President Lincoln acted on the moral issue of slavery by abolishing it in his executive order: The Emancipation Proclamation!
It should be expected that an African-American president would continue that moral stance and in what could be your most memorable speech, abolish discrimination against all – including gay citizens with an Emancipation Proclamation of your own.

Sincerely,

B. Pittman
