Written by Victor Barreiro Thursday, 04 February 2010 00:00
During the early 90’s Maria Jose served as the lead singer of the famous Mexican group Kabah. The act quickly became a household name and went on to rack up a number of accolades. However, as they say, “All good things must come to an end.” The group parted ways in 2005. Fortunately, the end of Kabah was the beginning of Maria Jose’s career as a solo artist. In 2007, she introduced her self titled debut album. Then in 2009, thanks to the success of the first album, Maria Jose released her sophomore album Amante de lo Ajeno. Audiences across the U.S. can currently see the sexy Mexican up close and personal thanks to her latest tour.
You're teaming up with the largest gay promoters Club Papi and Granda Entertainment, for a gay tour. Tell me about it.
It’s a wonderful opportunity for me. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the gay tour from my other friends, like Gloria Trevi, who have already participated. I am so happy and excited to work with them. I’ll be in a number of cities!
What can the audience expect to see in your show?
I’m very devoted to my fans and look forward to performing for those who have yet to see me live on stage. So, you can bet that I’ll be singing my heart out. It’s just me and the audience. One thing I do not like is when singers feel they are untouchable. There is nothing like having a close relationship with your audience.
Have you ever been to a gay club?
Of course! If you really want to have fun, then partying at a gay club is the way to go. Everyone is so warm and outgoing that there is no way you will be bored.
Tell us about the new CD.
It consists of 11 covers that became hits thanks to a number of voices from divas in the 80’s. The album has been a huge hit here in Mexico because it reunites the nostalgia of a generation and it sounds so fresh that the new generations identify with it as well.
Are there any artists that you would like to team up with in the future?
I love to share the stage with anyone who likes doing music. It doesn’t matter what genre they sing. When two completely different singers get together, great and unexpected things can happen.
Gloria Trevi is such a huge fan of the gay community. In fact, she did three gay tours, which were very successful. Have you ever had the chance to work with her?
Yes, we worked together on the song Vive, which was on Kabah’s final album. It was quite emotional because she was still in prison. We went to visit her a few times while she was still there. The song was recorded while she was incarcerated. A few days after her legal situation cleared and as she was released, ironically the album was released. It was great. We remain close friends.
Speaking of Kabah, you were with them for 13 years. How was that experience?
Kabah is my family, my school and my all. The experience I have on stage is because of my time with Kabah. We still get a long as a family, so much so that we even get together once a month for dinner.
