What’s hot around town, what to do, where to go and the hottest toys and gifts! Last Wednesday was the premier of Pledge Wednesday at Club 11 with pledge master DJ Daisy D and rushee bartender Jordan. This is an 18 and over night with no cover and $1000’s in giveaways hourly. The opening night was a huge success and we here at Hotspots Magazine would like to wish Sean and the staff and management at Club 11 congrats on a job well done! As reported in last week’s magazine this past weekend was White in Florida. Noche Latina Fridays featured Fuego Blanco with a $300 “Hot in White Contest.” Bill’s featured “Angels in White” starring recording artist Jeannie Tracy. Discotekka featured DJ/Producer Tracy Young and the Manhunt road trip and the finale to White Wear Weekend and White Fort Lauderdale was at Voodoo Lounge on Sunday and starred DJs Peter Rauhofer & Tracy Young, with opening DJs Miik, Roque, Skyy and Misha. The night also starred recording artist Kim English. All the white parties were successful (as you will see from the pic pages in the next few weeks) culminating with 2000 people at Voodoo lounge. Congrats goes out to Sea Monster, Bill’s, Discotekka and Voodoo Lounge for giving South Florida a fabulous weekend!

Life Lines opens at Cinema Paradiso. Writer-producer-director Rob Margolies’ debut feature bristles with smart dialogue, complex characters and heart wrenching performances. Set against the backdrop of suburban utopia, the Bernstein family leads a dysfunctional existence. With three foul-mouthed kids (Robbie Sublett, Dreama Walker and Jacob Kogan), a caffeine-addict mother (Jane Adams) on the brink and a less than forthcoming father (Josh Pais), they suffer an atmosphere so heavy with collective hostility and tension it seems as if the floral-papered walls will come crashing down at any minute. Forced to the breaking point, they concede to a family therapy session, where it quickly becomes clear that what’s at stake is “about a lot more than dry turkey.” Repressed anger and antagonism give way to moments of self-revelation, as a patient and compassionate Dr. Livingston (Joe Morton) draws out demons and dark secrets, allowing the family to start accepting their own humanity.

Noche Latina Fridays at Sea Monster presents the movie release party for Little Ashes with plenty of free movie passes. Little Ashes opens at the Gateway on Friday, June 5th. The night stars DJ Billy Hallquist along with shows by Alyssa Kartiar, Champagne Bordeaux and special guest Francina Holliday.
Bill’s has 2 HUGE events tonight. The first is the South Florida Athletic Association benefit from 8 to 10 pm and features an underwear auction at 9 pm, a 50/50 raffle, and a Carnaval Cruise raffle. The 2nd event, which starts directly after, is the first official Gay Days South Florida Party. The night will feature performances by Electra, Tiffany Arieagus, Miss Kitty and Misty Eyez as some of your favorite Disney characters. There will also be plenty of prizes and giveaways, including Blue Man Group tickets, Gay Days event tickets, Let’s Go Play (Typhoon Lagoon) tickets, Gay Days and Disney T-Shirts and Red Ball tickets. There will also be a 50/50 raffle to benefit Broward House.

Rising Action Theatre presents the 30th anniversary production of Martin Sherman’s play “Bent” from June 5th through July 19th, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm; Sunday at 3 pm. Bent takes place in 1934 Berlin, where Max and Rudy are lovers leading a frivolous lifestyle. After a night of debauchery they are faced with a Gestapo raid that leads Max and Rudy on a nightmare odyssey through Nazi Germany. In the camps, Max bribes a guard for a Jewish Star in lieu of a pink triangle as homosexuals are ranked lower on the human scale than Jews. Lakisha Jones – If you are an American Idol junkie like I am, you are probably still depressed that the best singer this season, Adam Lampert, did not take home the title. However, have no fear I am confident his career will far outshine anyone else from Season 8. Having said that, Season 6’s Lakisha Jones recently debut her first album, “So Glad I Am Me” to critical acclaim. You will probably remember Jones from her electrifying performance of the Dreamgirls showstopper “I Am Telling You.” My style is very soulful,” notes Jones. “I’m not one for doing big run-ups, riffs or frills. I’m just a straightforward singer without all the extras, giving out what was given to me.” You may remember that Jones is a single mother. “My daughter is very special to me,” says Jones. “A lot of times on this journey I was told no….That I couldn’t make it; that I couldn’t do anything with a child in my life now. But I wasn’t going to stop. Everything I do is for her.” Among other noteworthy songs on the 14 track album is the Diane Warren-penned “Same Song,” a sparkling ode to reconnecting the dots on a failed relationship. Not afraid to make a classic song her own, Jones puts her stamp on Whitney Houston’s “You Give Good Love.” Then she gives a shout out to her gospel roots on the inspirational “Just As I Am.” “This album is basically a story of my life,” says Jones. “I sat down with the writers and producers, telling them about different things happening in my life during the last two years.” It was Jones’ 92 year old grandmother who left the most lasting impression on the fledgling singer. It was at her urging (“let your voice shine”) that a five year old Jones began singing in church choirs and music programs.
