July 23,  2009

What’s hot around town, what to do, where to go and the hottest toys and gifts!

Wednesday, July 15th was the 4th annual Mr. Azucar pageant. After the spectacular opening production by Lemuel (08′), Kendrick (07), Josue (06) and Carlos (Honorary), the contest began and the boys really brought it to the stage. After 6 categories the winner and new Mr. Azucar is Jose Vega. Jose is a former Mr. Noche Latina and Mr. South Florida and we are sure will represent the title well. Congrats to Jose and the entire staff at Azucar for a very well run pageant. Saturday night was the grand opening of Voodoo Lounge Saturdays and starred national recording artist Kristine W. The club was wall to wall hot men, and stayed packed till after 3:30 am. Kudos to the owners and staff of Voodoo Lounge for bringing Fort Lauderdale a big gay Saturday night club. Sunday morning the foundation of the MCC Church and the Mr. State of Florida Continental pageantry system presented a benefit for their king, Lewis Nicholson, at the Coral Reef Guesthouse. The benefit featured free food and liquor as well as raffles to win some goodie baskets filled with XXX paraphernalia. The highlight of the benefit, which lasted all afternoon, was the underwear auction with over 10 really cute boys. A big shout out to my favorite model, Saso, who was just too adorable for words. The Shoppes of Winton Manors hosted a unique Street Bazaar on Sunday.  Even with the short lead time in pulling it together and the sweltering heat, over 25 vendors seemed to be very pleased with the outcome.  From clothing to antiques, everyone seemed to get caught up in the excitement.  “Considering the economy, we were pleased with the turnout” says Jon Anthony, owner of Bottoms & Tops.  “In fact, we are planning to make it a monthly event.” The concept was the result of a brainstorming session as retailers and merchants in the Shoppes came together to create this concept, including Chic Optique, Georgie’s Alibi, Bottoms & Tops, Island City Fitness, GayMart, Boom, Java Boys and more.  Sunday night I headed up to West Palm Beach where Jon Elu threw a premiere party for the new season of HGTV’s Design Star featuring West Palm Beach resident Nathan Galui as one of the contestants (check the Hotspots exclusive interview in last week’s magazine either in print or online at HotspotsMagazine.com). If the premiere show was any indication, Nathan is going to do very well.

This is Hot : Colton Ford

“Under the covers” is a simple, three word phrase. Three words that, when taken together, can—depending on one’s own proclivities—conjure up opposing images in the mind: naughty or nice, salacious or modest, dangerous or safe. Now, take these same three words and make them the title of the new album by singer-turned porn star-turned singer Colton Ford and the brain activity intensifies. Under the Covers is the second full-length album from Ford. Sure, the title winkingly refers to Ford’s adult film past, but it’s also an apt reference to the album’s main focus: songs made famous by others. Ford has recorded a collection of songs that sound, at once, wholly familiar and wonderfully fresh. In addition to speaking to Ford in a very real and personal way, the tracks that comprise Under the Covers made a significant impact when they were originally released and will be immediately familiar to a wide listening audience—even though someone other than the original artist is singing them. Explains Ford, “Adding my interpretation to these songs gives a new perspective to these classic tunes, enabling me to show different sides of my vocal ability.” Ford continues, “When you are covering a hit track, if you can retain the integrity of the original and bring your own style to it in the process, you can reveal something to the listener about you as an artist that perhaps they haven’t heard before. This album is also a friendly reminder of just how great these songs were and still are.” Speaking of his past career, Ford says, “I know that there are some people who aren’t going to be able to see beyond my porn persona, and that’s ok.” Pausing for a moment, he adds, “I feel, however, that there are far more people out there who are interested in hearing what I can do musically, and are able to look beyond that part of my past. Those are the people I’m looking to reach. I’m doing what I love to do, so at the end of the day, I can say that I’m following my heart and living my dream. Isn’t that what we all want for ourselves?” The CD can be purchased in stores nationwide in August.
