It was my pleasure to sit down with owner, Dave Baker, for a Hotspots exclusive interview.

1) How did the idea of the Flamingo Reflamingo4sort come about?

After the Suncoast Resort closed their doors, there was a real void in the gay community. The place where so many gathered with friends and celebrated life was gone. Friends were lost. This is why we opened the Flamingo. To give the GLBT community a clean, safe place to come and reunite with old friends or make new ones. A place where we all come and celebrate, have fun, and be entertained.

2) How long did it take you to find the property?

Initially, we were going to build a new resort from plans we had designed from the ground up. But right as we were to sign the deal, the property became available.

3) How did you come up with the name?

The concept is a style with light, cool colors, sleek lines and an old Miami or South Beach hotel. We felt the name Flamingo (and the color pink) gave a feel as an old Florida gay hotel from the Deco era.

flamingo54) How has the resort lived up to your initial concept?

Perfectly, everything has gone according to plan. We have exceeded our own expectations involving improvements to the property. We have just installed 10′ glass doors leading to the BLu Room and expect to be adding a leather/fetish bar in the near future.

flamingo65) In the first year what has been your favorite events?

We have themed events almost every other week. However the ones that stand out would be our Flamingoween Party, the Pink Party, Erotica and most recently Wet-n-Wild when we had huge inflatable water slides. Our guests really go all out and participate, which makes it fun and the events real successful.

6) What do you have planned for the future?

We want to keep adding more and bigger events. We want to entertain our guests beyond their expectations and make their stay comfortable. In addition, there is another bar planned and more retailers are expected to join our resort.

The Flamingo Resort will be celebrating their 1 year anniversary this weekend Friday, August 27th through Sunday, August 29th with a tremendous amount of surprises and special guest performers. I will personally be there on Sunday along with the Hotspots staff to celebrate with Dave and his staff. If you see us, please come over and say hi!
