Out Music Awards – OUT

The Out Music Awards was to be held December 1, 2010, just one week from today. Now the artists who were nominated and the attendees are left to scramble to cancel hotels, flights and reservations of all sorts. Everyone, from artists to dancers to production staff, is outraged at this latest failure of the Out Music Awards. The 2009 Out Music Awards were a disaster, from no names on the winners’ envelopes to people being asked to move closer to the stage so the stadium would look more full, to long periods of silence between acts on stage, now the 2010 Awards canceled due to a “last minute sponsor pullout.”

Out Music Awards – Out

Hotspots Magazine freelance reporter Shane Phoenix discovered that today official statements from the 501(c)3 organization producing the OUT Music Awards say they will not be held as scheduled and is canceled until the spring of 2011!

The LGBT Recording Academy has yet to respond to the crisis at hand and to major media outlets such as Hotspots Magazine. Appearing to attempt to avoid questions on the matter, Diedra Meredith, executive director of the Out Music Awards stated, “Right now, Shane, I have way too much to deal with, but will answer your questions later.”

However, big names in the LGBT music world are not so silent. Singer/songwriter Terry Christopher, an Out Music Award Nominee, says “This is an embarrassment, not only to the artist but also to the industry.” When asked how he feels about this, he goes on to say, “This disaster is at the expense of LGBT artists who have paid for flights and non-refundable hotel expenses because an alleged sponsor backed out. Who doesn’t have a sponsor under contract to avoid this very thing, which then in turn protects the artist who are meant to be celebrated?”

A source close to the Out Music Awards stated that this is not simply about a sponsor pullout (no sponsor listed on the Out Music Awards website would confirm a pull out to this writer), it is about how funds were not used right and how, once again “the so called executive director” messed up the awards again! The source requested to remain nameless until a later date.

This is a developing story with more to come, so stayed tune for more details!
