flower-power-nina-flowers-2HOTSPOTS MAGAZINE: When did you start doing drag?

NINA FLOWERS: I started doing Drag in March of 1993 when I was studying to become a professional make up artist. Make up was the first big step I took towards becoming an entertainer. This was definitely the beginning of a new chapter in my life.

Who are your influences?

My influences come from the fierce decade of the ’80s – Boy George, Annie Lennox, Pete Burns from Dead or Alive, Cyndi Lauper, Nina Hagen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, and the legendary Divine.

Would you do more reality television?

I would love to do more reality tv as long as it feels right and not staged.

Who are you closest with from your season of Drag Race?

I have a lot of respect for all my sisters. After my season ended I brought each and every one of them to perform in my show, “Drama Drag” that takes place in the biggest gay venue in the state of Colorado, Tracks Nightclub. We all keep in touch! It’s hard to say which one is my favorite because I love them all – including the controversial ones (laughs). But during the show I developed a strong bond with Bebe, Ongina and Jade – I think it’s because they were the one’s I spent more time with. After the show I became a lot closer to Tammie, Shannel and Akashia. Victoria and Rebecca text me occasionally. Everybody seems to be doing fantastic!

What do you like about coming to Miami to perform?

I’m very excited – Miami is a great city. Very fashion forward, fierce music, fierce DJs, fierce entertainers, beautiful people and a great nightlife. This would be my first time performing there since the show.

What should the crowd expect?

I’m going to Miami as I am – colorful, energetic and full of excitement. This will be the premier party for my next single “I’m Feeling Flowers”, so I hope my fans show up with all kinds of flowers to party with me.

Tell me more about “I’m Feeling Flowers.”

This song is produced by Miami’s own legendary D.J. MDW, with remixes by Sugar’s resident DJ Jarell, who will also be playing that night at the event. This is an explosive track that reflects my personality as an entertainer. We have been playing the track in several cities, and so far the response is amazing. I’m very excited to perform to it for the first time, and I’m confident that it will become a hit.

What’s next for Nina Flowers?

(Laughs) I never like to talk much about my future projects, but so far the bookings keep coming for me and I haven’t stop touring the nation since Drag Race season 1 ended. There are definitely a lot of musical projects in the making, and with the help of the fans and the professionals I’m working with, I will soon be on my way to conquering the world! I have an amazing passion for music and one of my dreams is to become a musical producer. Also with Flowers Production (my company), I’m working on making a clothing line for performers, with the trademark name “DRAMA DRAG”. Much more to come but I refuse to tell you all (laughs). Like I always say, “The sky is the limit.”
