The ninth eliminated contestant to sashay away on LOGO TVs RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 is Yara Sofia. Here is what she had to say.
At what age did female impersonation become an interest?
Like most queens, I did drag for the first time on Halloween when I was either 16 or 17 and after that, I got the bug. However, since I was a little boy I used to wear my mom’s heels and I loved how my legs looked in them.
How did you pick your name?
I had been surrounded by professional dancers when I used to work for a dance academy. They produced a beauty pageant, but it was for fun (Miss Pera Queen). I was “Cuba” and I chose my first name, Yara, after this beautiful girl I went to school with. My last name was chosen by a friend when I was doing that contest.
How did you go about getting on “RuPauls Drag Race.” Tell me about the experience?
My first time auditioning was for the third season. The video was very me and I was very excited that they picked me. The live audition process is very long and a bit frustrating, but I was determined to get through it.
I went to the competition with an open mind and it was so much fun; I really enjoyed it.
Who do you want to win?
I want Alexis to win of course because she has charisma, uniqueness and a lot of talent. I would like Manila to place 2nd.
Tell me about the man behind Yara Sofia?
The man is very shy. Right now I am speaking as Yara who has all the outgoing qualities. The man I am, Gaby, is only for my family and a partner, but Yara is in charge the rest of the time.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
Well, that I am gay! I have been hiding this for years, but it’s true!
What’s ahead for Yara Sofia?
Working, I am booked all over the country and I am so excited about it. DJ’s have approached me to produce songs. Yara is going to be even bigger, so watch out world!
