Locals Tell Us About Their Fathers

Hotspots spoke with community leaders to find out what makes or made their dads so special to them. Read below for their heartfelt responses.

Chris Caputo, MetroMediaWorks

My father led by example. He taught me his golden rule for life – “Take care of others first, and the universe will ensure you are provided for.”

Craig Stevens, WSVN Channel 7 News Anchor

My father was the greatest because of what he actively tried to teach me and what I learned by watching him. He always said if you put in the work, success will eventually follow.  I’ve tried to live by that in every aspect of my life and career and so far, so good.  Whatever failures I’ve suffered, it’s simply because I didn’t put in the work. Even though he passed away several years ago, on rare occasions, I can still hear his voice cheering me on to try again, but the next time put in 110% effort.

Dale Madison, Fundraising Coordinator of The Poverello Center

My father has been so supportive of me. He has never spoken down to me once I “came out.” Through all of my life both parents have been there. It’s been pretty amazing.

Dale Stine, Photographer

That which I consider to be the most important accomplishment of my life is also the greatest gift — my relationship with my dad. We were able to begin a true healing process before he passed away, a process that continues to evolve. I say, “His journey was to build the chasm between us and my journey has been to build the bridge back to him.” Mission accomplished.

Deidra Bergmann, Director Events & Fundraising of ThePetProject and a member of the Board of Directors for SunServe

My father was the greatest influence in my life. Dad took care of me for 18 years and I was proud to take care of him his last years. It’s been a year since I saw my dad, but he is with me, I just can’t see him. The greatest gift I ever got was called Dad.

Linda Jain, Program Operations Manager of The Pride Center at Equality Park

My dad was a free spirit. He had a great – some might say odd – sense of humor. And he was a talented musician. I miss him.

Michael Krauser, location manager for Wilton Executive Suites

My favorite memory of my father is when he told his church that they were wrong about the way they felt about gay people. He learned to love me for who I am. That started a new relationship for us.
