lgbt-events-south-florida-0A week ago Monday was Amy Rivers’ annual Miss South Beach Pageant this year held at the Castle Lounge in Hollywood. There were 4 very qualified contestants that put on a fabulous show. In the end the crown went to Krystal West who won 4 of the 5 categories. Tuesday was the monthly Fort Lauderdale Mack Mixer, this month held at J. Marks restaurants. As usual the mixer was packed and the treats from J. Marks were delish (can you say sliders….YUM!). Wednesday night was the volunteer and sponsor appreciation party for Celebrate Orgullo at the MDGLCC Visitors Center in Miami Beach. Many turned out for the event which featured hors d’oeuvres, an open bar courtesy of Brown Forman and lots of fun!

Thursday was the start of the 3rd annual Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at Cinema Paradisio and continued all weekend long at the Manor. From what I saw they sold to record crowds. Congratulations to the entire film festival board for once again providing the community with a great event!

On Friday night I headed to Bills for the continuation of their week long celebration of their 16th anniversary. Growl Fridays featured a bear appreciation party with guest host Ricky Sinz along with weekly hostess Miss Kitty. The anniversary continued Saturday night with a pajama party starring internet superstar Sherry Vine. Congratulations to Jackson, Mark and the entire Bill’s team on a fabulous 16th anniversary weekend and wishing them many more to come!

Also Saturday night was the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s annual Miami Recognition Dinner at the beautiful Fontainebleau Hotel. The Task Force dinners pay tribute to community leaders, allies and organizations that fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people through their leadership, advocacy and action. This year the honorees were Georg Ketelholn and Ben Cohen. The dinner was packed with what seemed like 1000 people and was a who’s who of the Miami Social scene all coming together for a great cause! As you can see this was an exhausting week, so Sunday was the day of rest!

Get out your feathers, glue guns and ribbons, because it’s time for the Key West Business Guild’s annual fundraising extravaganza, the 29th Annual Headdress Ball, at the Southernmost on the Beach. The aptly named Aquatic Afrolic: Underseas Odysseys begins at 8 pm with doors opening at 7 pm. The Headdress Ball, famous as an elaborate headdress competition with “over the top” entertainment, is Fantasy Fest’s premier gay and lesbian event. Many entrants spend months constructing their elaborate costumes, while others outfit themselves from an array of exotic feathers, sequins, and leather accouterments purchased locally. The competition focuses on the “neck up” with a panel of local celebrity judges scoring on the Headdress, not the costumes. The cash prizes top out at $1500. There is no entry fee to compete in the Headdress Ball. Anyone interested can sign-up to compete the evening of the event or in advance at info@gaykeywestfl.com. Although Headdress Ball tables are already sold out, $30 general admission tickets are still available. There is no admission fee for the Post-Party. Tickets are available at www.keystix.com. For more information, go to HeaddressBallKeyWest.com or call 305-294-4603.

Sidelines Sports Bar is extremely grateful to “Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure, Inc” for holding its recent benefit event at the popular sports bar. Additionally, the owner of Sidelines, Laurie Whittaker, wishes to thank all of the sponsor businesses, volunteers, VIPs, city officials, media personalities, community leaders and business owners who came out to donate their time and money to support such a worthwhile cause. While Mother Nature tried to “knock out” the event, the newly created foundation formed by Bernadette Zizzo, who was diagnosed with breast cancer a short time ago, is to assist persons dealing with breast cancer, deemed the weekend event a terrific success. At the last calculation, the total amount raised to help those dealing with breast cancer was over $4,300.00, with even more monies to be tabulated after all the Silent Auction winners claim their prizes. While Bernadette is still fighting her own health and medical issues along with her doctors, she remains confident and is looking forward to helping other persons via this foundation.

lgbt-events-south-florida-11Cyndi Lauper will release the live concert DVD “To Memphis,With Love” on Megaforce Records on October 25th. “To Memphis,With Love,” taped earlier this year at The Warehouse in Memphis and featuring special guests including Allen Toussaint, Tracy Nelson and Jonny Lang, serves as Cyndi’s love letter to the blues and the city that she has fallen in love with.

“To Memphis,With Love” will feature special, live concert performances of songs from Lauper’s latest album, 2010’s Grammy-nominated, best-selling blues album of 2010, “Memphis Blues,” which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart and held the top spot for 14 weeks. “If there’s been a better blues album this year, it’s a well-kept secret,” remarked Newsweek Magazine, “It takes guts for a singer to walk onto territory once owned by Memphis Minnie, but Lauper pulls it off like a woman who knows everything there is to know about having fun with the blues.” Lauper’s blues-focused live performances have won over audiences and critics alike. The New York Post raved, “She belted blues classics like she was born on the Delta rather than in Queens. With grit in her voice and swagger in her stage presence… Lauper’s set never faltered and she didn’t lack for classic material. She was killer.” For more information visit: CyndiLauper.comor follow her on Twitter @SheBop_aka_cyn
