Almost two years ago, Mark & Carrie of MC Film Fest and the Dishing column in our magazine, began choosing a young person as their Nephew/Niece of the Week. They are now announcing their 100th Nephew/Niece of the Week and it made us want to know where this fun idea came from. We spoke with the popular couple to find out more.

dishing-family-affair-100-nephew-1What inspired you to pick a Nephew/Niece of the Week?

For years people have been calling us Uncle Mark and Uncle Carrie. I think because so many of the younger people come to us for advice on everything from dating, coming out, roommates to home, work and school problems. We enjoyed being a positive transition to the younger LGBT generation by being an extended family member.

What do you look for in a Nephew/Niece of the Week? What kind of qualities do they need to have?

All of our Nephews and Nieces are honest, hardworking good people. Most have an etiquette of being young work-aholics with a personal goal in mind. Most are either working or living in Tampa Bay or GaYBOR District.

Who was your first Nephew/Niece of the Week?

Keith Frey or “KC” as he is known to us.  Keith started to work for us when he was 18 years old as our popcorn boy at the SunCoast Resort in St. Pete.  Keith was the very first to start calling us “The Uncles.”

dishing-family-affair-100-nephew-2What kind of feedback/reaction do your choices receive from being picked as Nephew/Niece of the Week?

dishing-family-affair-100-nephew-3They get tons of Facebook Friend Requests almost immediately. But the really cool part is when they are walking around GaYBOR, people walk up to them and congratulate them.  It is a great way to make friends in the Tampa Bay/ GaYBOR community.

Who is the 100th niece/nephew of the week?

Adam Jahr (Facebook.com/ajahr).

Why was he chosen?

Adam is an inspiration to many in our community. He is very handsome, outgoing, available, happy with a smile on his face and has the natural knack to listen to individual/ group problems or situations before giving an answer. A graduate of the University of Central Florida, he is the LGBT Program Manager at Metro Charity & Wellness Centers and was a young  staff writer at La Gaceta Newspaper in Ybor City.  Adam is dedicated to improving his/our LGBT community which makes him an easy and proud choice for our #100 Nephew/ Niece of the week.
