RuPaul’s Drag Race – Latrice Royale

She is Large, In Charge, Chunky yet Funky, the BOLD and the BEAUTIFUL, she is Latrice Royale. She had the most memorable farewell speech of all 4 seasons from a contestant being eliminated on RuPaul’s Drag Race, but the day after she was eliminated she was filming Drag U and unavailable for an interview. I could not be more proud of Latrice, who has been a personal friend of mine for 15 years, for the way she handled herself with respect and dignity the entire season. I have been there for her up s and downs and everything in between and it gives me so much pleasure to sit down with Latrice for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

1) At what age did female impersonation become an interest?

At 20 when I first saw Tiffany Arieagus in a drag show at the Copa. I got excited and it became my goal to entertain.

2) How did you pick your name?

Latrice was a childhood friend from elementary school, who was a really pretty black girl. When I signed up for my first show at the Copa my friend gave me the last name Royale because he said I was chocolaty and fudgy like Royale.

3) How did you go about getting on “RuPauls Drag Race.” Tell me about the experience?

Getting on started with a simple e-mail saying how much I wanted it and how hard I would work and give it my all. I got a phone call and had to produce a video over the weekend and send it in and I got picked. I am a charismatic bitch and I can’t help it if people fall in love with me!

The experience was obviously the most amazing thing I have ever been through. I learned a lot about myself and about a lot of people. I did a lot of healing during the show, it was such a rewarding experience.

4) You were very candid on the show and mentioned your imprisonment. Why did you bring this up and are you glad you did?

I brought it up so that people can be aware that whatever past you have or whatever mistake you made there is still hope and not to give up on life. It was the most liberating thing I have ever done, extremely freeing. I am an open book; there are no skeletons in my closet.

5) How cathartic was it to play a Prison Security guard in the Sitcom challenge “Hot in Tuck-a-Hoe”?

It really was, as I watched those security guards for 15 months and I picked up all their attitude. Those black women have no time for the BS at all. It was easy for me to transform into one of them.

6) What was your favorite mini challenge and what was your favorite regular challenge and why?

My favorite mini challenge was “Reading is fundamental”: as I can read people in very few words. My favorite main challenge was a tossup between the wrestling and the boat challenge.

7) Tell me about the man behind Latrice Royale?

Basically Tim is what makes Latrice come alive. But personality wise there is no difference. Although, Latrice gets more of the boys!

8) Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.

That I am a award winning Color Guard Choreographer and designer and I am a graphic artist.

9) What’s ahead for Latrice Royale?

I am very excited that I am going to be on Drag U this summer. I am also working on a single that I am releasing this summer and I am now being booked all over the country and I am so psyched to meet all my fans. Oh yeah, I am looking for a husband, so hopefully that will be my future.
