This is our slow season but I have nearly every weekend in August chock-full of plans! This weekend I’m going to be traveling to Atlanta to celebrate Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia with gay and lesbian tourists from throughout the Southeast! The next weekend, I’m going to Orlando, where I’ll be stopping at quite a few bars and clubs, but I definitely can’t miss the Facts of Life show at the Parliament House’s Footlight Theater! Then after that, I’ll be making my first trip for the magazine to Sarasota! It’s been a blast meeting everyone and getting to know what exactly makes the Central Florida gay communities great.  As always, if you have an event that would be perfect for this column, e-mail me at mike@hotspotsmedia.com. Please make sure the event is at least seven days in the future; I do compile the events in advance. Lots of love to you all!

Friday August 9

whcf fridayAn absolute bear of a time is promised this weekend at Sawmill Resort in Dade City. The Backwoods Bears Club is celebrating its 11th anniversary starting today, with events like a beer bust, bingo, drag shows, and more happening throughout the weekend.

Masquerades Bar and Cabaret in Port Charlotte will be presenting “A Night for the Big Apple,” a benefit for the family of local performer Candie Apple, whose mother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Doors open at 9 p.m. with a $5 suggested donation; money raised at the benefit will go toward medical procedures and hospital bills. Drag shows will begin at 11 p.m. and midnight.

Saturday is hopping in Orlando, and you have a few options for the evening, whether you are setting out late or you’re going to party after Leigh Shannon’s show!
