This is our slow season but I have nearly every weekend in August chock-full of plans! This weekend I’m going to be traveling to Atlanta to celebrate Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia with gay and lesbian tourists from throughout the Southeast! The next weekend, I’m going to Orlando, where I’ll be stopping at quite a few bars and clubs, but I definitely can’t miss the Facts of Life show at the Parliament House’s Footlight Theater…

This is our slow season but I have nearly every weekend in August chock-full of plans! This weekend I’m going to be traveling to Atlanta to celebrate Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia with gay and lesbian tourists from throughout the Southeast! The next weekend, I’m going to Orlando, where I’ll be stopping at quite a few bars and clubs, but I definitely can’t miss the Facts of Life show at the Parliament House’s Footlight Theater! Then after that, I’ll be making my first trip for the magazine to Sarasota! It’s been a blast meeting everyone and getting to know what exactly makes the Central Florida gay communities great. As always, if you have an event that would be perfect for this column, e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please make sure the event is at least seven days in the future; I do compile the events in advance. Lots of love to you all!
Friday August 9
An absolute bear of a time is promised this weekend at Sawmill Resort in Dade City. The Backwoods Bears Club is celebrating its 11th anniversary starting today, with events like a beer bust, bingo, drag shows, and more happening throughout the weekend.
The gay community of the southern Suncoast comes together to help out friends in need. Masquerades Bar and Cabaret in Port Charlotte will be presenting “A Night for the Big Apple,” a benefit for the family of local performer Candie Apple, whose mother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Doors open at 9 p.m. with a $5 suggested donation; money raised at the benefit will go toward medical procedures and hospital bills. Drag shows will begin at 11 p.m. and midnight.
Saturday August 10
Treat yourself to dinner and a show at Hamburger Mary’s in Orlando! Make a reservation for 8 o’clock, order your food and drinks, and then wait for Leigh Shannon’s Cabaret Dinner Show to start at 8:30! You’re in for a very entertaining time, and who knows who may drop in on the fun? Eat, drink, and be Mary with Leigh Shannon on Saturday evening.
A hot night is promised at Throb Nightclub in Sarasota. A drag show is at the center of the evening, with two shows at 12 and 1 a.m. In “The Spotlight” this evening is special guest Tayanna Love, coming up for the weekend all the way from Fort Lauderdale!
Saturday is hopping in Orlando, and you have a few options for the evening, whether you are setting out late or you’re going to party after Leigh Shannon’s show! At Parliament House, there is going to be a Grindr Party, sponsored by Bacardi. All you have to do is show your Grindr app on your smartphone and you get into the Parliament House for free all night! Pick a room and a bar and party with all the sexy men! (The disco is good for man-ogling!)
If you want something a little more lady-centric in Orlando, Revolution Nightclub is having an event called Leo Explosion. Ivy from Les Vixens and Sara Andrews are headlining some explosive shows! The Ladies of the Majestic Theater will be performing at 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., with a cast including Blue Starr, Maya Andrews and Sasha Colby. The Les Vixens Burlesque Show will be on stage at midnight. Doors are open at 8 p.m., and you can get in free before 11 p.m. if you are over 21.
Are you a fan of the HBO series “Game of Thrones”? G.Bar in Tampa is holding a medieval-themed party called Gayme of Thrones. The club will be transformed into a castle, complete with knights, wizards…and lots of queens! DJ Bruce Devery’s music can be heard in the main room, and VJ Charles Machado will be in the video room. Doors open at 9 p.m.
Sunday August 11
The Honey Pot and Liquid Tampa come together for two good causes with the aptly-named Come Together Ball. Proceeds from the ball will benefit The Harvey Milk Institute in New York City and our local Metro Wellness Center. You can purchase “early bird” tickets online at Eventbrite, as of press time the tickets cost $12. The ball begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 11 at The Honey Pot, after which the party moves to Liquid Tampa (no cover over here), which will be hosted by Avalon Infiniti, Aurora Infiniti and Nicky Monet. Partygoers can win $100 in a crowd-participation vogue contest!
