Win a Vespa with Out of the Closet’s Test-to-Win Giveaway

Four Out of the Closet thrift store locations in South Florida are participating in a Test-to-Win Vespa Giveaway sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation that will see four lucky entrants zipping around Miami and Fort Lauderdale on brand new scooters come June 30. To enter, contestants must simply take a free, confidential, 60-second HIV test through participating thrift store locations or events.

The contest kicked off on March 1, where people were welcomed to enter by taking a free HIV test at any of the four participating thrift store locations – the Biscayne store (2900 N. Biscayne Blvd. in Miami), the South Beach location (1510 Alton Rd. in Miami Beach), the Wilton Manors shop (2097 Wilton Dr. in Wilton Manors), or the Sunrise flagship (1785 East Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale). Another early entry opportunity took place at the South Florida Pride celebration on March 1 and 2, where a total of 172 people took free tests to enter the contest. Finally, at the Winterfest party on March 8, an additional 132 people seized an early opportunity to get tested and enter the contest.

Testing will continue to be available as entry for the contest at all four Out of the Closet locations until June 30 (after that point, testing will continue to be available but will not qualify the person being tested for the contest). Additional opportunities to enter through free testing will take place at AHF events held on Miami Beach on April 26, May 16, and June 13. All entries will be pooled as they enter, with one winner being selected on June 22 at Wilton Manors Pride and three more winners being selected when the contest ends on June 30.

All four 2013 Vespa LX 50 scooters – two of which are black and the other two of which are aquamarine – are on display in the participating Out of the Closet stores until June 30.

“South Florida is the perfect market for a Vespa, and we’re excited to offer four Floridians the opportunity to experience the sunny weather with wind in their hair as they cruise around town on a brand new scooter from AIDS Healthcare Foundation,” said Jonathan Kreuyer, General Manager of Retail Operations for the national Out of the Closet chain. “Every time someone asks where they got their Vespa, they’ll be able to raise awareness for the importance of HIV testing in South Florida, where HIV rates are still among the highest in the nation.”

A March 2013 fact sheet on the ‘HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the United States’ published by the Kaiser Family Foundation notes that Florida reported the second highest number of new HIV cases nationwide in 2011.  According to the Florida Department of Health’s January 2014 Monthly Surveillance Report, Broward County saw 1,043 new HIV infections in 2013, as well as 498 new AIDS diagnoses, which contribute to Florida’s statewide 2013 totals of 5,916 new HIV cases and 3,279 new AIDS cases. As of December 31, 2013, the department estimated that 104,181 Floridians were living with HIV/AIDS.
