By now most of you have probably heard of Curiosities Auction House which opened up a few months ago across the street from Pride Factory on 13th Street in Fort Lauderdale. They have quickly become famous for their first and third Wednesday of the month auctions, which feature complimentary wine and beer for bidders. If you haven’t been yet and want to see some of the most eclectic merchandise you have ever seen, check them out on either of their next auctions, on July 4th or 18th. It was a pleasure to sit down with the owner Ray Duffy to find out more about Curiosities Auction House.

What made you open Curiosities Auction House?

After moving from LA, I really wanted to create a hip and trendy alternative to date night, somewhere for people to go with friends that was different and unique. I loved going to auctions and felt that it was a great platform to have some fun and bring people together.  I wanted to elevate the experience, giving it a contemporary feel with little perks like complimentary valet, beer, and wine.

What makes Curiosities different from other auction houses?

I think we have an amazing space with amazing stuff.  It feels more like a giant loft than a stuffy auction house and we carry that vibe in to how we do business.  I’m from Ireland, I like talking and getting to know people so I’d like to think we’re really friendly.  Also, we treat people fairly.  Our premium to sell items for consigners is just 25% and our buyers’ premium is just 15%.  We’re also open Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 5 and Saturday from 10 to 2 for retail hours where buyers have the opportunity to “buy it now,” which is unique.

What’s ahead for Curiosities Auction House?

World domination.  Okay, not exactly.  But we are looking forward to entrenching ourselves in the community and growing the business.  We’re also planning some pretty spectacular parties so I would stay tuned for those.
