OLYMPIA THEATER AT THE GUSMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
The timeless Giacomo Puccini opera La Bohème has been enjoyed by millions all over the world since it was first performed nearly 120 years ago, and is considered one of the most popular librettos ever written. Now, South Florida audiences will be able to see this classic in two performances at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts (174 E. Flagler Street, Miami). The first showing will be performed on Saturday, August 16 at 8 p.m. and the second showing, a matinee, will go on Sunday, August 17 at 4 p.m.
La Bohème, an opera in four acts, tells the story of a love story that blossoms against the backdrop of Paris’s Latin Quarter. The heroine, seamstress Mimi, introduces herself to the romantic poet Rodolfo asking for a light for her candle. The story of young love, of triumph and tragedy, has resonated with audiences for over a century, and has inspired derivative works such as the popular Jonathan Larson musical (and subsequent feature film) Rent.
The South Florida production of La Bohème is produced by Miami Lyric Opera founder and artistic director, Italian-born tenor Raffaele Cardone. He has presented over 80 performances in South Florida and nearly two dozen with the Miami Lyric Company. Local singing talents Rodolfo Cuevas and Nathalie Avila portray Rodolfo and Mimi, respectively.
Tickets range in price from $25 to $45 for both performances. Seats in the orchestra, mezzanine and balcony are all available as of press time. Tickets can be purchased online at gusmancenter.org or by going to the box office (174 E. Flagler Street). Box office hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday (except for 2 to 3 p.m.).
