FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport serves millions of domestic and international travelers each year, and as Fort Lauderdale has grown as a tourist destination, the airport grew as well, adding a new runway for planes taking off and landing in sunny South Florida. Now, weeks before the new runway will be used for air traffic, it will be the backdrop for thousands of people walking for a noble cause — finding a cure for cancer.

The American Cancer Society will be hosting a Relay for Life event on this new runway (airport located at 100 Aviation Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) on Saturday, August 23 starting at 5 p.m. If you haven’t participated in a Relay for Life, these walks are dedicated to the people who have been affected by the horrors of cancer. Whether someone in your family has had cancer, or whether you’ve survived the fight yourself, you can participate to raise awareness and of course funds to help end the fight for everyone forever.

The Relay for Life starts at 5 p.m. with an opening ceremony that celebrates the lives of people who have had cancer, followed by a special lap around the runway to recognize cancer survivors and people who have cared for cancer patients. Then, the walk begins for all attendees and continues until 9 p.m. At that time, a luminaria ceremony will be held to honor the lives and memories of people who have lived through cancer, and the people we have lost. This is followed by a fight back ceremony at 11 p.m., where the crowd pledges to continue to fight to raise cancer awareness. The closing ceremony comes shortly after.

RSVPing your spot on the runway is easy and free, go to rflontherunway.eventbrite.com to et your ticket. To raise money to find a cure for cancer, you can sign up as a Relay for Life participant or you can join a current team by going to tinyurl.com/relayrunway. If you can’t be there to participate in the walk, a donation link is also available on the aforementioned Relay for Life website. As of press time, nearly 650 participants in South Florida have raised over $84,000 toward finding a cure for cancer.
