Patti LaBelle started her career as lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, which eventually became the group LaBelle in the 1970s. Mixing Philadelphia soul with funk influences, LaBelle (consisting of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash) earned a #1 hit with the song “Lady Marmalade.” LaBelle was the first black pop group to play the Metropolitan Opera House and was the first black pop group to land on the cover of Rolling Stone. Patti LaBelle went solo in 1977 and has since sold over 50 million albums and earned two Grammy Awards. Her songs “New Attitude,” “Stir It Up,” “On My Own,” “If Only You Knew,” “You Are My Friend” and “If You Asked Me To,” among others, became worldwide hits. Also a noted actress, she appears this autumn in the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show, as the mother of Gabourey Sidibe’s character.
