Teddy, hace mucho tiempo que fuimos al Museo Dalí de St. Petersburg, ya tienen un edificio nuevo y montones de exposiciones y programas además de su colección principal permanente.

Sí Adora, es verdad que fuimos antes de la construcción nueva. Tienen como cien de los cuadros de aceite en lienzo de Salvador Dalí, quizás uno de los pintores españoles más famosos del siglo XX. Representa la colección más grande de los Estados Unidos. Fue adquirido por la familia Morse mientras Dalí vivía; le visitaron en España y se hicieron amigos a lo largo de los años.

A mí me encantan los cuadros de Dalí. Me invocan el sentimiento de que todo fuera posible. Su
obra se trata de la imaginación y es tan detallado. Tenía la habilidad de enfocar en sus pensamientos subconscientes cuando la idea del subconsciente fue totalmente nueva.

Se dice que una vez alguien le preguntó a Dalí si usaba drogas. Era la década de los 60 y todo el mundo tomaba LSD y otras drogas. Él respondió ¨yo no tomo drogas, YO SOY drogas.¨ En realidad, Dalí devotó su vida a la exploración de la vida interna espantosa. Freud dijo que tenemos que afrontar lo todo para estar libres. Dalí y los otros surrealistas de los 1920´s y ´30´s eran muy importantes en el desarrollo de un vocabulario visual para las ideas de Freud.

Ok, pues el 8 de marzo se abre una exposición que se trata de la conexión entre Dalí y Leonardo da Vinci. Se trata de los dispositivos mecánicos que usaron los dos artistas. La exposición Dalí/Picasso Picasso/Dalí acaba de cerrar a finales de febrero, pero hay un cataloga en la librería del museo. La colección permanente esta siempre mostrado, me han dicho que la han arreglado en grupos pequeños así que es más fácil seguir su progresión como artista y su descarrilamiento estilístico.

Vamos ya. Podemos quedar en el Ybor City, el barrio retro de Tampa con todos los bares gay, tiendas antiguas. ¿Cómo se llama este hotel donde quedamos?¿ Lo de los muebles y cuadros antiguos?

Ay, sí, El Hotel Don Vicente de Ybor. Es un lugar fantástico, representa la vieja Florida, es muy teatral, como surreal también.

Teddy, we haven´t been to the Dali Museum for so long. They have a great new building, all kinds of exhibits, programs, and they have their permanent collection as well.

It´s true; we went before the new building was built. They have about one hundred oil paintings by Salvador Dali, one of the most famous Spanish painters from the 20th century. It is actually the largest collection of Dali´s paintings in the US. It was all acquired by the Morse family while Dali was still alive; they visited him in Spain and became friends with the artist for years.

I love Dali´s work; it makes me feel like anything is possible. His work is all about imagination, and it´s all so detailed. He could really channel his subconscious mind in a time when the whole idea of the subconscious mind was new.

Yeah, they say that one time, someone ask Dali if he used drugs. This was during the 60´s, I guess, when everyone was taking LSD and shrooms. Apparently, he replied: ¨I don´t take drugs, I AM drugs.¨ He really devoted his life to exploring the scary inner life. Freud had said we have to confront all this stuff to become free. Dali and the other surrealists in the 20´s and 30´s were really important for developing a kind of visual vocabulary of Freud´s ideas.

Okay, so on March 8, they are opening an exhibit about the connection between Dali and Leonardo da Vinci. It deals with the mechanical devices featured in the works of both artists. Unfortunately, they just closed an exhibit that dealt with the relationship between Pablo Picasso, perhaps THE most famous Spanish artist, and Dali. However, you can still pick up a copy of the catalogue from the museum book store. Of course, the museum´s permanent collection is always on view and I hear they have rearranged the collection into smaller groupings so that it´s easier to see his artistic progression and his stylistic development.

Alright, let´s go! We can stay in Ybor City, the cool retro neighborhood in Tampa with all the gay bars, vintage shops and cafes. What was the name of that hotel that we stayed in the last time we were there?

Oh yes, The Don Vicente de Ybor Historic Inn. It´s so great, totally old Florida, old Tampa, it´s from 1905. That place is so theatrical, it´s kind of surreal in its own way too.
