Charlie Hides untucked

In Week four of Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” started out with the main challenge where group leaders Trinity and Aja picked their teams for a Morning show. In the end Aja’s team (Valentina, Alexis, Farrah, Sasha and Shea) were called the “Good Morning Bitches” and Trinity’s team (Eureka, Nina, Peppermint, Charlie and Cynthia) were called team “Not On Today.” The runway challenge was “Naughty Nighties.” In the end Team “Good Morning Bitches” won and team members were all safe. The bottom two from “Not On Today” were Trinity and Charlie Hides. In the end, Trinity killed the lip synch and Charlie sashayed away.

At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

I started doing drag as a teenager. I started sneaking in to bars at a very young age and got banned. Afterwards, my friend, who was a drag queen, told me they never ID drag queens. Soon afterwards I started doing drag to get into the clubs, and meet boys. My drag name is my birth name.

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen?

I applied for season eight and nine and I was over the moon when I was chosen. It was like all of my Christmases and birthdays came at once.

Is there any additional pressure now that RuPaul has been on for eight seasons and two all-star seasons?

Definitely, as the standard is raised and the expectations of the audience members are higher. I mean, for God’s sake, the first guest judge was Lady Gaga…LOL!!

Tell me about your “RuPaul’s Drag Race” experience?

Well, the show is much harder than it looks; it’s like my tuck! It was challenging, grueling, exciting, and I highly recommend it.
You are very famous for your YouTube Videos, how did this come about?

I had been using videos in my live shows for a while. I used it as little mini commercials to allow me to do a costume change. People started to tell me I should put it on YouTube. I then started creating custom content for YouTube and it opened up a whole new creative vein for me as it took me in a whole new direction and it was seen by the whole world. The videos afforded me the opportunity to get bookings all over the world.
You impersonate many famous celebrities. Who is your favorite to impersonate and why?

I love performing as Cher, as she is bad a$$, rock and roll, and legendary. I also love performing as Joan Rivers. But most of all I enjoy being me. I went on “RuPaul” to show people there is more to me then celebrity impersonations.
Are you single/married, etc.?

I am married and I have been with my partner for 20 years. We got married in Provincetown when it became legal.

Who do you want to win?

For me it’s between Trinity, Sasha, and Alexis. Alexis because I adore her, Trinity because she is fierce and took me down, and Sasha because I have seen him perform live and he is unlike anything I have seen on the show before.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.

I had a broken rib from the cheerleading episode, but I kept on going. That is the reason I didn’t move during the lip synch battle. In my spare time I renovate houses and I make them look gorgeous.

What’s ahead for Charlie Hides?

I’m doing comedy tours with Bianca, Lady Bunny, Alyssa Edwards, and Katya. I’m releasing new music…my first song was entitled “Don’t Call Us” and the new song is called “The Dame.”
