An Interview with Drag Sensation Alexis De La Mer

Alexis De La Mer

What was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience?

My first drag show was a pageant/contest called Miss Fire Island in Cherry Grove N.Y., and it was magical. I saw Queens of all shapes, sizes and colors. They had a talent group, and then a group that just modeled gowns, it was beautiful. A few years later I ended up entering, it was so much fun!

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

I decided to do drag for Halloween at a bar called the Silver Lining, in Queens N.Y, just for fun. It was about 1990, and then I started to watch and learn to really study the art form.

WATCH:

Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

My Drag Mom is Ariel Sinclair, who is now the Hostess of Lips in NY, and is also the Hostess of shows at the Ice Palace on Fire Island.  She took me under her wing after seeing me on my first Halloween venture. She painted me for a whole year because I was scared to do my own make-up.

My two Favorite Queens?  I can’t decide on one [laughs]. T.P. Lords and Electra. Electra was hosting the Miss Fire Island Pageant, and she came out as Bette Midler to open the pageant.  Then in the middle she transformed into Barbra Streisand, and ended the pageant as Elton John. I was blown away by her illusions, and amazing replica costumes.

My other fav queen is T.P. Lords for her outrageous colorful costumes, and the fact that she can also transform into a pageant queen…truly a versatile entertainer, and now a friend!

What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

My current favorite song to perform is “What’s Up” by International songstress Beth Anne Sacks. It’s a feel good song about love, and unity. Plus it gets everyone dancing, and singing along.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

The best thing that has happened to me in drag was winning the Headdress Ball in Orlando, which is a HUGE benefit for HIV, and being crowned by Darcel Stevens. Another amazing thing that I have been blessed with in drag is being on cast at the Flamingo Resort in St. Pete, for the past 8 Years (since day 1). I’ve met so many wonderful friends, and we’re truly a family there!

What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

Considering I started out in NYC, I think my fun makeup, big hair, and crazy music mixes makes me unique to the community. I’m part glam, club kid, and newly pageant queen.

What does the future hold?

The future holds for me many more years at the Flamingo Resort, and I’m also on cast at Hamburger Mary’s in St. Pete. I call Bingo on Monday’s for different non-profit organizations all over Tampa Bay. I enjoy putting benefits together, so I definitely like helping others, and want to do more charity work!
