DBMD – Your Comprehensive Wellness and Primary Care Clinic

Opens Next Door to Hotspots Office

Derrick Bowling, M.D. is one of South Florida’s premiere physicians experienced in combining traditional medical training with cutting edge wellness and regenerative medicine. At DB+MD you will experience the advantages of this unique approach in every aspect of your care. It was a pleasure to sit down with Derrick and his life partner and office Manager Steve Ryan, for this exclusive Hotspots Interview.

Derrick – Did you always want to be a Doctor, or when did that start for you?

I wanted to be a lawyer and went to college with that intention. However, I fell in love with teaching language, but realized it wasn’t challenging enough. I wanted to do something that was challenging, helpful to people, and rewarding; medicine has been a fantastic fit. So much about medicine is teaching people about their health.

Steve – Growing up what did you think your career path would be?

I grew up in a small town in Alabama and I wanted to have a career that would allow me to travel and experience different cultures. Until 2011, I worked for Northwest Airlines and got to see the world.

Tell us about your education?

Derrick – I am native of Russellville, Alabama, and I attended the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa from 1988 to 1994. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in German and History in 1992, and summa cum laude with a Master of Arts in German Literature in 1994.  While at the University of Alabama I taught German pronunciation as an Undergraduate Lecturer, and was an Instructor of German as a graduate student and post-graduation before entering medical school. I also taught distance education courses and community night courses for German with the arrival of the Mercedes plant in Alabama.  While teaching high school freshman English and German for grades 9-12, including Advanced Placement German, in Ocala, Florida, I decided to pursue a career in medicine.

From 1995 until 1998 I attended UAB to prepare for medical school. I began my medical education at UAB School of Medicine in 1998 and graduated in the Top 12% of my class in 2002. I completed my clinical years and residency at UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Residency. I was Chief Resident in my final year of training.  I have completed a Fellowship in Peptide Therapy and a Fellowship in Stem Cell Therapy with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.  I am currently studying integrative medicine.

Steve – I am a graduate from The University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Sales. While living in Alabama, I was a real estate agent/broker and flipped houses on the side. I have been fortunate to be able to work with Derrick as his office manager since we moved to Florida.

What do you guys do for fun?

DerrickAs an avid student of other cultures and languages, I enjoy traveling with my husband and friends. I still speak German fluently, and I am currently studying Spanish, French, and Italian.  Besides studying other languages, I enjoy biking, kayaking, gardening, reading, theater, cooking, and playing cards with friends. I have been a runner since 2011 and have completed 26 half-marathons as well as a few 5k and 10k races.

Steve – I am an avid runner, having completed 30 half marathons and 1 full marathon. I also enjoy biking, kayaking, and relaxing on the beach with a good book.

When and why did you move to South Florida?

Steve – We moved to South Florida in 2017 after many years of vacationing here with my husband of 17 years.  The wonderful blend of international culture has made us feel right at home.

I met you guys when you worked for Remedium Wellness.  How was that experience for you guys, and what made you branch out on your own?

Derrick – When we got to South Florida I had a job that had me traveling a few days a week. I wasn’t crazy about that, but it was a job. Then Remedium came along and I jumped at the opportunity. From that job we realized we don’t fit in with corporate medicine. However, it was the first time we worked together, and we realized how well we do that.

Please list the services you offer, and their benefits?

Sexual Health – We offer Acoustic Wave Treatments, Peptide Therapy, Hormone Replacement Therapy, and PRP, along with traditional medicines to help you achieve the healthiest sexual functioning possible.

Primary Care – We provide evidence-based outpatient primary care in a pleasant, patient-centered atmosphere. This includes chronic disease management, acute care, and wellness visits for optimum health.

Regenerative Health – There are many exciting possibilities today to achieve a longer, healthier life. We can administer regenerative therapies such as peptides or PRP that may enhance your body’s natural ability to heal and function better, helping to advance your anti-aging efforts.

Peptides – Are the next big area of medicine and healthcare and we are going to see more and more health care professionals starting with a peptide rather than a pharmaceutical. It’’s basically taking medicine to the cellular level.

We also draw labs in house, perform EKGs and rapid testing for Strep/Flu, Hemoglobin A1C and urinalysis.

Now that we are in the Covid -19 era, do you do testing, etc?

We have rapid (15 minute) anti-body testing for IGM (first Anti-body) and IGG (Anti-body that lasts). We will also have Antigen testing (also a rapid test) when the manufacturers catch up with demand.

What affiliations do you have?

Derrick – I am a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, the Florida Medical Association, the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine and the International Peptide Society.  I was previously a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.

Do you take Insurance?

Steve – Currently we take Humana, Cigna and we can see all non-HMO Medicare. We are joining Holy Cross Physician Partners ACO as an independent practice and will soon be in all major networks.

If someone is looking for a new Doctor, why should they pick DBMD?

Derrick – I think the biggest reason is that I actually care about what happens to my patients and I have done hundreds of hours of continuing medical education to give my patients the best possible care. I practice cutting edge medicine with a focus on prevention and patient centered approach. .
