The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is opening its doors to the public with the long-awaited unveiling of its exhibition, “Raúl de Nieves: Eternal Return and The Obsidian Heart.” The exhibition, curated by Risa Puleo, will be on view through March 21. It’s the first exhibition to consider symbiosis between the artist’s solo sculptural work and collaborative performances as well as de Nieves’ most comprehensive survey to date. The artist and Puleo worked closely together to design the exhibition as an immersive experience in which individual sculptures, installations, and audio performances blend into a cohesive experience of the spiritual, familial, and self across time.  Multimedia artist, performer and musician de Nieves drew his inspiration from memories from his childhood in his hometown of Michoacá, Mexico, where public religious rituals and private devotional acts included elaborate costuming, performances, and theatrical components. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, MOCA has instituted new health and safety guidelines that require social distancing and face coverings, among other measures. For the safety of its visitors, staff members, and volunteers, the museum is also implementing enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols, such as the placement of signage and hand sanitizer throughout the museum.
