I Got a New Job and My Partner Does Not Want to Move

0

Dear Andreus,

My job is requiring that I move to California for a year for work. It is part of a process that would lead to a great promotion and awesome benefits. My partner does not want to go to California and is unwilling to do long distance until I return in a year. I love him deeply but find myself in a difficult situation. He told me that if I leave, we are over. Why should I have to choose? I don’t know what to do. Please help.

Sincerely,

Jesse R.

Jesse,

The only thing I can tell you, is do what is best for you in the long run. You should not have to choose your career over your relationship or vice versa. In a perfect world, anyone who truly loves you would encourage your advancement, and not force you to make this type of decision. It seems like whatever decision you make; it is going to be a difficult one, but never short yourself because someone else is  holding you back. If for some reason the relationship didn’t work in the future, you would be plagued by the “what if” of going after your promotion. Again, do what is best for you, and let the chips fall where they may. The people who are meant to be in your life, will stay.
